This activity gives participants the opportunity to explore what they understand by the term ‘creativity’ and how it could be useful for them and their communities.
Participants stand in a horseshoe, arranging themselves according to how much they know about social enterprise. Participants stand at one end if social enterprise is new to them, and at the other if they know a lot. Participants then explain why they chose to stand where they are by sharing their knowledge about social enterprise with the group. This is both good for reviewing participants’ self-assessed level of awareness, and as a learning activity to collect the knowledge of the group.
This exercise is a guided meditation that encourages participants to begin to look at who they are, develop skills to be more self-reflective and to reconnect with the senses, something that an arts-based approach encourages.
This is a gentle but active way of looking at identity and culture. The exercise encourages participants to share information about themselves with the group in a safe way.
Once the group has been introduced to the Active Citizens learning journey, this approach could help them to start thinking of creative ways of exploring what the programme means to them.
Participants explore the vision of the learning programme and take ownership of it. Through the lens of a Social Enterprise Leader, participants work in groups to reflect on and respond to a series of questions about the vision of the programme.
Participants indicate how much they know about key subjects by placing dots, which represent degrees of understanding, on a target. It enables participants to note their starting point and monitor their progress during the workshop.
This activity introduces the idea of our ‘comfort zone’ and what happens if we spend too much time outside of it. It explores how to look after ourselves – physically and emotionally – when on the journey through the Active Citizens river.
Making something happen when you have limited resources is a key skill of social enterprise. Making do with what you have, identifying unused assets that could have value, motivating stakeholders and organising people and money towards achieving change.
This activity is an opportunity for participants to share their expectations for the learning programme with each other as well as to consider what they personally can offer to contribute to the success of the workshop.
